Dracaena Warneckii Plant Care Guide

dracaena warneckii

Dracaena Warneckii is a type of Dracaena Fragrans (Corn Plant), an unpretentious perennial plant that can grow up to 2 meters in height at home. This species is distinguished by narrow ensiform leaves up to half a meter long and about 5 cm wide. The color of leaves is rich green with a beautiful silvery (less often yellow) border along the edges.

Young plants are covered with foliage completely, but gradually their trunks are exposed. In indoor cultivation, it blooms rarely, releasing a “panicle” of white pleasantly smelling flowers. The delicate aroma of flowers distinguishes Warneckii from most other dracaena varieties.

Dracaena Warneckii: Plant Care Guide

Dracaena Warneckii is absolutely unpretentious in care. To maintain decorativeness, it needs a sufficient amount of sunlight, and otherwise it is ready to tolerate even very harsh growing conditions.

To keep the plant strong and healthy, follow these simple rules:

Lighting

А bright place, a penumbra, where there is no direct sunlight, will be ideal for Dracaena Warneckii. The best way is to place a pot with a plant from the side of the south window, where the lighting will be scattered.

Watering

The soil should always remain moist, however, does not tolerate stagnation of water in the pot or drying of the soil. In winter, the soil should dry between watering. In summer, watering Dracaena Warneckii is recommended not more than once a week and only after the soil in the pot dries a little, this kind of dracaena requires less watering than many other plants. Like many other exotic plants, Warneckii is very fond of having its leaves sprayed regularly: at normal levels of humidity, it forms lusher and brightly colored rosettes.

Use filtered or well-settled water for watering and spraying.

Temperature

Dracaena Warneckii can spend summer outdoors and winter- at a temperature not lower than 15°C.

Dracaena Warneckii does not stand drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Humidity

Dracaena Warneckii tolerates the usual humidity of living quarters (at the level of 40% - 60%).

Soil

For this type of dracaena, it is better to buy ready-made soil for palm trees. If desired, compose the soil yourself, prepare the following soil mixture: turf, leaf, purulent, peat (2:1:1:1:0 ,5); for large specimens - turf, leaf, humic, large sand (gravel) in the ratio 3:1:1:1:1. The soil should be well drained.

Repotting

Replanting the flower should be as nutrient stocks in the soil are depleted, but at least once every 2-3 years. It is better to buy ready soil, pick up a high and not wide pot, pour a good layer of drainage to the bottom so that moisture does not stagnate at the roots. You can fertilize dracaena with any fertilizer for ornamental and deciduous plants, in summer - once a week, in winter - once a month or generally suspend dressing until the beginning of the new growing season.

Toxicity

Make sure your pets don't chew on Dracaena Warneckii. The plant is toxic to animals and can cause weakness, vomiting and indigestion. At the first signs of poisoning, immediately bring your pet to a veterinarian. See more about pets and the effect toxins have here at the ASPCA.

How to propagate Dracaena Warneckii

Cutting Dracaena

In indoor cultivation, Dracaena Warneckii propagates in two ways: apical or stem cuttings.

To get a new plant with apical cuttings, neatly cut one of the tops of an adult dracaena (the cuttings should have a length of about 15 cm). The cut part is lightly dried and planted in the prepared substrate: sand, hydrogel, perlite or something similar. Cuttings are covered with a bag, plastic or glass to create greenhouse conditions for it. To prevent cuttings from rotting, you need to carefully monitor the moisturizing of the soil, preventing its over-drying or from an excess of liquid. After rooting, the young plant is transplanted into a permanent pot.

If the top of the dracaena is wither, stem cuttings are taken for propagation, you can cut them from a healthy trunk of an adult plant in pieces 5-20 cm long. Cuttings are placed in soil vertically or horizontally. With horizontal rooting, the stem of the cuttings gradually collapses, instead of its new independent plant, shoots are formed, which are transplanted to a permanent place after rooting.

Usually, cuttings take root for about 1.5 months. If during this time the roots did not have time to form, then something in the process of rooting was done wrong, and cuttings are unlikely to get used, so the whole procedure will have to be repeated again.

Dracaena Warneckii is an ideal plant for those who do not have much experience in growing houseplants or can't spend much time caring for them. Due to its spectacular appearance, it will be able to decorate any interior of an apartment or office, without requiring special attention.
